Where is Governor Perry’s Head?

As we Texans are facing a multi-billion dollar budget deficit – under the leadership of a man who ran under the platform of balancing the budget – I expected some cuts to start happening. Hearing his plan to cut funding to things such as the Arts, film, and historical concerns, while irritating and unfortunate, don’t bother me too much in the long run. If sacrifices need to be made, I’d rather funding gets cut temporarily rather than teachers and service people being let go. (Of course, the big wigs in these government agencies are making no such sacrifices.)

But this. THIS bothers me. We Texans are worried about jobs being cut, increased taxes and further funding cuts, and our Governor wants to push through Abortion legislation? You may remember that in 2007, he also tried to make HPV vaccinations mandatory.

So my question becomes, why in the midst of economic turmoil, does Perry keep trying to push his way into womens’ private business? And the worst part is that I can’t help thinking that this a way of pandering to religious groups as a way of drumming up support for some kind of future Presidential bid. I guess it’s the Libertarian in me talking but, I really would rather our elected officials focus on the problems of public safety, and stay out of peoples’ lives.

What do you think, am I overreacting, or are Governor Perry’s priorities out of whack?

(Disclosure: my wife works for a State agency)

  1. Probably- but what gets me is not what you’ve mentioned. The abortion issue is touchy, and filled with slanted semantics: disbanding Child Protective Services could also be called “staying out of peoples lives”.

My issue is that Texas’ assistance for the mentally ill, one of the most prevalent, debilitating, and under treated health issues in existence, is 48th in the nation per capita, and this is another area expecting FURTHER cuts. I’d also agree with you that education is not an area that we can afford to skimp on.

    • Good point! I hadn’t thought about that.

  2. You’re right. If Mr. Big Government Lite was really worried about unborn humans, he would simply sign a bill that outlaws the practice of abortion. Who do you think will be paying for all of these sonograms? That’s right. Joe Taxpayer.

Rick Perry cuddles too close to Glenn Beck. Beck had him on his radio show a few weeks ago, plugging his new book. Perry spoke very conservatively, but he is a true and true deceptiCON. He doesn’t like big government unless it’s his form of big government and the churches (whom he seems to be pandering to on this particular piece of legislation) are full of sheeple who hear him just like they hear their own pastor and simply say “gooood. gooooood. baaaaah. gooood”, and never question anything he says, simply because of the capital “R” next to his name. Nor do they ever question what their pastor says.

Well I question everything. The world is full of “con” artists (pun intended). I’ll shut up now. :D
